Milo Nosal

NOSAL, Miloslav (Milo).
March 23, 1939 (Choceň, Czechoslovakia) to November 9, 2018 (Calgary, Alberta, Canada).

Milo Nosal passed away peacefully in his Calgary home on 9 November 2018 at 79 years of age. Milo was born in Choceň, Czechoslovakia, to Vilém and Maruška Nosal. The oldest of 3 boys, Milo studied composition at the Prague Conservatory of Music and was an accomplished pianist, flautist and clarinetist. He earned his MS (1961) and PhD (1967) in Mathematical Statistics from Charles University in Prague before embarking to Canada in 1968 in search of adventure and opportunity. Milo was Professor of Biostatistics at the University of Calgary from 1969 to 2013. He founded Statscon Statistical Consulting Co., serving as president and chief scientist for nearly 3 decades. Milo’s diverse list of additional accomplishments includes a book publishing company, a diving and finishing business, and an audio recording and production studio.

An avid sportsman and adventurer, Milo enjoyed camping, hunting, boating, fishing, diving, hiking, skiing, and nature photography. He also loved colorful flowers, good food, classical and jazz music, dancing, and engaging company. Milo was fascinated by bears and sharks; his favorite color was red; he loved to dress finely and "let the good times roll". Eccentric and fiercely independent, Milo defied convention, blazed his own path, and exuded a "larger than life" presence and personality that was felt deeply by all those he touched. Above all else, Milo was a loving husband, a proud and devoted father and grandfather, and happiest with his family in the mountains.

Milo leaves behind his beloved and devoted wife Tae Nosal; son & daughter-in-law, Eric & Nada Nosal and their children Joe & Maya; daughter Eva-Marie Nosal, from a prior marriage to Eva Nosal, and son-in-law Tom; brothers & sisters-in-law Vilem & Jarmila Nosal, Jiri & Jana Nosal, and their families including Milo’s 7 nieces and nephews in the Czech Republic; extended family Mana & Jiro Kiyotani and their daughter Miho in Japan; and many friends and colleagues.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, November 18, 2018 at 1 pm. Viewing/respects will be held prior (noon to 1 pm) and an onsite reception will follow the service. Location: McInnis & Holloway Crowfoot Chapel (82 Crowfoot Circle N.W. Calgary).

It was with sad memories that the news of Miloslav's death reached me, while I was at a conference in Russia. I have MANY fond memories of the early days of the Calgary Renaissance Singers and Players and Miroslav's prowess on a seemingly endless range of wind instruments. It was with awe (and no small measure of envy) that I would listen as he played, improvised, embellished, usually with a slightly sardonic smile (any wider and he would not be able to control his embouchure on whatever instrument was in his mouth). I remember disassembling an imposing pipe organ in someone's home to transport it to Miroslav's home, where he set about reassembling it. One regret is that we did not manage to get together for him to show off his most recent sound equipment and for me to bring along recordings that showed that there are virtuoso cornetto players in the word today, able to play all those amazing works of the Italian Renaissance. I was always grateful for the opportunity to speak my "birth" language with Miloslav and thus keep it alive. I cannot be at the celebration, but I shall make a point of toasting him that day.
